They are born beige then quickly turn blue. The blue cows of Latvia, rare species in eastern Europe, have been saved from extinction. Put aside from the century in the middle of the XXth century to the profit of other cattle breeds, the blue cows of Latvia have seen their population decrease over the years. In 2000, there were only 18 blue cows in Latvia compared to around 1,500 today thanks to massive conservation efforts from both the state and the environmental associations.
