Temperature changes sometimes cause morning mists and fogs in winter and spring in Alsace. The generally hot summers sometimes last until October, which benefits the grapes and allows a specific wine-growing process. The Vendanges Tardives (Late Harvest) are grapes whose over-maturity produces a noble rot that gives them a rich flavor. This label concerns wines such as Pinot Gris, Riesling, or Gewurztraminer, all strictly controlled AOC varieties (Appellation of Controlled Origin).
