A ‘lit à la polonaise’ (Polish bed) is leaning against the wall of the Marquises’ bedroom in the Château du Haut of Villarceaux. This furniture was very popular at the end of the 18th century for its elegant and graceful shape. A small oval canopy narrower than the bed rests on the two backs of the bed. It holds curtains attached to cloth-covered columns. The curtains may be made of silk, as at Villarceaux, where the precious fabric is edged with gold thread trimmings. The Louis-XVI chairs and armchairs are upholstered in a fabric matching the bed. To the left of the furniture, the ebony and mother-of-pearl crucifix comes from the castle's former chapel.
