The Bugatti ZZy 24408 express railcar, commissioned by the French State Railways Administration from Ettore Bugatti, was one of the world’s first modern high-speed trains. Tested right out of the factory, it reached a speed of 107 mph (172 km/h). It was powered by four Bugatti Royal petrol engines and was very aerodynamic. The railcar was put into service on the Paris-Deauville line, with a cruising speed of 73 mph (118 km/h). In the years 1933-1935, eight wagons of this type were delivered. They are now nicknamed “Présidentiel”, after an official trip by President Albert Lebrun. The only preserved example is on display at the Cité du Train-Patrimoine SNCF in Mulhouse.
