Es una caldera volcánica llena de agua de 3 kilómetros de ancho formada por el colapso de este volcán de dacita tras una erupción de VEI-6 acontecida hace unos ochocientos años. Se produjeron flujos que llegaron al Océano Pacífico.
La profundidad desde la superficie del agua al fondo son unos 250 metros.
El tono verdoso se debe al tipo de minerales dispuestos en el agua, a su vez hay fumarolas en su interior y manantiales calientes que hacen un efecto de hervor del agua.
