The Virgin and the seven vices

The Portal of the Virgin of Metz Cathedral is the entrance to the former church of Notre-Dame-La-Ronde, attached to the building during its construction. It disappeared in 1754 when arcades were added to the cathedral, then was restored in 1880. The portal displays a statue of the Virgin smiling on a pedestal. Seven vices similar to the Seven Deadly Sins are carved on it and presented as vectors of all the others. Cowardice, idolatry, arrogance, despair, greed, wrath, and pride appear crushed under the Virgin's feet.
