Saint Odile came into the world blind. Her father, Duke Adalric, who expected the birth of a son, was so irritated that he wanted to kill her. At the request of her mother Bereswinde, sister-in-law of King Childeric, the nurse hid the child in the monastery of Palme, in Burgundy (today Baume-les-Dames). Odile regained sight during her baptism by Saint Erhard. Her father decided to marry her by force, and she fled across the Rhine. Just as she was about to be caught, the rock on which she was praying opened, and she escaped her father. Seeing the will of God manifesting openly, the duke gave Odile the castle of Hohenbourg.
