Dry stone walls have been built for centuries in the Menton hinterland and all the municipalities of the French Riviera known for their pronounced relief. They allowed the rural populations of the past to develop the steep slopes of their land and to promote the expansion of food crops. Sheltered by such dry stone walls, the locals cultivated chestnut trees, olive trees, or citrus fruits.
