Tracking the boil

The piece shaped in the hot workshop undergoes the first of a long list of quality inspections. The Lalique master glassmakers take great pride in producing works of art and their crystal must have the desired purity. No bubbles (known as boils) or imbalances should be visible, otherwise the object is permanently discarded and recast. A boil may form when the crystal is melted or when the melt is picked up. It is sometimes due to impurities attached to the picking rod. If it is present on the surface of the crystal, the boil is said to be broken!
