A toast to tradition

While the tradition of drinking in honour of a God or a hero dates back to Antiquity, the term “to propose a toast” comes from a medieval French word. Indeed, in the 11th century, a “tostée” referred to a slice of grilled bread soaked in wine drunk in honour of a lady. The custom then crossed the Channel and the word became “toast”. Nowadays toasting means drinking to celebrate an event or to someone’s health. French people are used to say “santé!” (health!) before clinking glasses and drinking.
