The Sacred Heart Basilica stands in the heart of Nancy. The construction of this Byzantine-style church was decided at the end of the 19th century by Bishop Charles-François Turinaz, buried inside it. The monument has numerous similarities with the Sacred Heart of Montmartre in Paris. The tradition of the Sacred Heart dates back to the apostle Saint John, who placed his head on the heart of Jesus during the Last Supper. It inspired the edification of many churches throughout the centuries. Bishop Turinaz also initiated the construction of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes Basilica in Nancy.
