The tower of the Burgundians, located on the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes in the Gard department, bears this name in reference to its story. In 1421, during the Hundred Years' War, the Burgundians who were the allies of the English enemy at the time reigned supreme over the city of Aigues-Mortes. These same Burgundians were massacred by the royal troops of the city when it returned to the hands of the kingdom of France. As the abandoned bodies of the murdered Burgundians could not be buried in the frozen ground, they were stored in this tower which now bears their name, then covered with salt to avoid the minor inconvenience associated with their decomposition.
