The low Arctic tundra stretches over the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and northern Quebec over an area of 498,193 sqmi (801,765km2) with average temperatures ranging from 39 to 43°F (4 to 6⁰C) in summer and -63.5 to -82.4 (-17.5 and -28°C) in winter. The permafrost is present over most of the territory whose altitude varies between 0 and 2834ft (0 and 864m).
