It is one of the largest freshwater turtles in Australia. The Mary River turtle was discovered in 1994. Nicknamed the punk turtle, it is endemic to the waters of the Mary River (south-eastern Australia). On the top of her skull, it has a fluorescent green ridge made up of algae. This physical characteristic is explained by the time that the species spend underwater. It can go three days without taking her head out of the water.
