The 2006 Asian Games colossal torch

Located 200 metres away from the Khalifa International Stadium, The Torch Doha is a 984 ft (300 m) high skyscraper built to shelter the flame of the 15th Asian Games, held at Doha in December 2006. The tower is also known as the Aspire Tower, Khalifa Sports Tower, or Doha Olympic Tower. Since 2007, the 51-storey tower houses a five-star hotel with 163 rooms, a sports museum, a health club, a cantilevered swimming pool, a revolving restaurant, and an 360° observation deck. Designed by architects Hadi Simaan and Etienne Tricaud in partnership with engineer Ove Arup, the tower is shaped to represent a colossal torch crowned with a cone wrapped in a latticework shell. The central structure of reinforced concrete is built in the limestone soil on a 23 ft (7 m) thick slab on piles. The tower’s exterior is covered with a steel mesh adapted to extreme solar exposure. In 2006, it supported the highest flame in the history of the Asian Games. As such, The Torch Doha remains a landmark for sports enthusiasts.
