The name of Ecueil would come from the Frankish word skul, but traces of housing going back between 8,000 and 5,000 years BC were found in the area. During the 18th century, the village mainly consisted of winegrowers and plowmen. Its fame came from François Clicquot, who developed his father's champagne trade under King Louis XVI. He died at age 31, and his widow changed the estate's name to Veuve Clicquot. Since then, the champagne has contributed to making the village of Ecueil famous worldwide.
