The centrifugation technique

The glassmaker’s bench has a crucial function of horizontal centrifugation to enlarge the piece. It is used to smooth the surface with a mallet (wooden ladle) or a wick (simple newspaper folded and soaked in water). Vertical centrifugation is used to lengthen the mass by reeling with the rod. During the shaping process, the master glassmaker heats the piece in the mouth of the kiln to improve its malleability. Different tongs are used to give the desired shape, especially for the elaboration of the neck of a vase or its base.
