Corsica is the only entirely insular region of metropolitan France. As such, it has been subjected to numerous invasions. Paradoxically, the maritime activities have never been essential and no large ports nor substantial fishing have been developed. Its now largely deserted mountains have long served as refuges and allowed the island to survive the most eventful episodes of its history.
