The Seine is at the heart of the development of Paris, of which it embodies the central topographic axis. Very early perceived as a major territorial and economic asset, it accompanied the growth of the city initially established on the 'Ile de la Cité' and became its economic engine. The very early control (from the 1st century) of navigation and trade was the first source of wealth of Paris. An economic link between Ile-de-France and Champagne and the North Sea, the Seine is the busiest waterway in France with 21.3 million tonnes of goods passing through it each year.
