The Roman room

The large mosaic from the 3rd century AD, discovered in 1848 in Bergheim (Haut-Rhin), is one of the first pieces of work to form the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar. Located in the basement of the former Dominican convent, the Roman room is organised around the Bergheim mosaic, which occupies the central position. Around it, on three walls, are displayed Gallo-Roman sandstone steles, a bas-relief of a Celtic warrior, and an altar dedicated to Jupiter. Two thematic showcases offer an overview of daily life in Alsace in Roman times, through objects from excavations in the region.
