The ‘route des crêtes’ (D23) starts from the Auberge des Crêtes about 2,624 feet (800 m) after leaving La Palud-sur-Verdon coming from Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, and ends 14.2 miles (23 km) further at the Hôtel de Provence, still in the same town. It was mostly built by the inhabitants of La Palud between 1948 and 1972. The route follows an old mule track and is only open for tourism purposes from April to the end of November; the only spots accessible year-round are the ‘Chalet de la Maline’ and ‘Belvédère de la Carelle’. It is dotted with 14 belvederes overlooking the Verdon up to 2,296 feet (700 metres). The route is one-way for 9.3 miles (15 km) – from ‘Jas d’Aire’ to ‘Chalet de la Maline’ – and can only be travelled clockwise, in 1.5 hours to 3 hours.
