The road linking Xonrupt to the Schlucht was opened in 1860. It was initiated by Charles-Henry Hogard, who owned a villa on the shore of Gérardmer's lake. The route was built according to the plans of the Hartmann brothers under the impetus of Napoleon III. The Empress Eugénie was indeed coming to stay at the Altenberg, a spa hotel then very popular, on the Alsatian side. The tourist craze grew and the town of Xonrupt-Longemer, until then attached to Gérardmer, became autonomous in 1919.
