The Alsace Wine Route, inaugurated in 1953, crosses the region from north to south over 105 mi (170 km) and some 70 wine-growing villages. The diversity of the soils gives the wines different tastes and structures, which are expressed through the region's 51 Grands Crus. The oldest wine in the world is kept in Alsace in the Historic Cellar of the Hospices of Strasbourg. It is a white wine from the region dating from 1472.
