The rotunda Alexander III

The Grand Palais offers 2 rotundas at its 2 ends. The Rotonda Alexander III is the main access to the galleries which surround the nave. At the top of its 4 Ionic columns, a plaque pays homage to the architects. Each rotunda is topped by a spectacular quadriga of 4 horses which seem to come out of the building in a frantic race. The southern one represents Apollo-Harmony triumphing over Discord. The heavy copper group weighs 12 tons and occupies a square of 19 ft (6m) per side at 82 ft (25m) in height. The quadrigas are the work of Georges Récipon. They were installed in 1901 after 2 years of hard work.
