In the 13th century, thanks to the innovations of Gothic art, the chevet of the Saint-Denis Basilica was decorated with 21 high stained glass windows. The north and south ends of the transept were adorned with a stained glass rose covered on the outside with a stone rose window. Financed by Louis IX in 1250 and 1260, they were destroyed during the Revolution and restored in 1842. The southern rose, with a diameter of 14 metres, could have served as a model for the one in Notre-Dame de Paris. It is composed of four juxtaposed circles: around the central figure of God, the twelve signs of the Zodiac represent the course of the sun.
