The resistance of Haut-Koenigsbourg

The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) decimated Alsace by two-thirds of its population. It barely affected Alsace until 1632 and the Swedish intervention. The Swedes seized Alsace in July 1633. The whole region was under their control, except the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle. They decided to conquer it and entrusted the task to Jean Philippe de Salm. Despite a severe bombardment, the never-kept promises of reinforcements, and the defection of the people of Orschwiller, refugees at the castle, Philippe de Lichtenau resisted 52 days.
