The 'renaturation' of the Salins d'Hyères
2
0
The Salins d'Hyères are one of the most biodiverse wetlands in France. However, for several decades, they have suffered an erosion phenomenon which accelerates the retreat of the coastline (southern dune ridge), the disappearance of the Aleppo pines and shady areas, the scouring of the beach and threatens their hydraulic structures. The rip-rap built in the 1980s to try to fix the coastline did not prevent the water from gaining 98 feet (30 meters) in twenty years and aggravated the phenomenon of erosion of the adjacent dune ridge creating a risk of marine intrusion into the saline supply channel. Since 2017, two projects called Marittimo and Adapto have enabled the 'renaturation' of the Salins and increased their biodiversity tenfold by restoring the interface between the wetland and the beach. The subsequent reappearance of a wider cordon and a small Mediterranean dune as well as the formation of banks of dead Posidonia on the sand are natural tools in the fight against erosion.
