The surprising tail of the motmot

The motmot (Momotus momota) is often perched on a branch and swings its long tail back and forth like a clock pendulum when disturbed. This display communicates that it is aware of a predator and is prepared to escape. It prevents the motmot from wasting time and energy fleeing, and the predator avoids a costly pursuit that is unlikely to result in capture.
