A loud call

Howler monkeys are considered the loudest land animals on the planet. In the forests of Central and South America, their call may be heard more than one kilometer away. As their name suggests, voice communication is very important in their daily lives. Their powerful vocal production comes from their hypertrophied hyoid bone, located just above the larynx, and which acts like a sound box.
