Symbol of the power of Ducal Normandy, Château Gaillard was built by Richard the Lionheart in Les Andelys. This majestic fortress dominates the right bank of the Seine and was built in record time to protect Rouen from the king of France Philippe Auguste. Following the death of King Richard, killed by crossbow fire during a siege in Haute-Vienne in April 1199, the King of France launched an attack and a terrible 7-month siege on the castle. The fortress will eventually fall, and Normandy is finally annexed to the Kingdom of France.
