The protector of Aigues-Mortes

The Tour Carbonnière (Carbonnière Tower) of Aigues-Mortes was built at the end of the 13th century, at the same time as the city's ramparts. The stones used for its construction were brush cut and came from the same quarry. Square in shape, the tower spans the road and stands as a guardian of the stronghold of Aigues-Mortes amid the marshes. The Tour Carbonnière has gone through many eras and conflicts. After the civil wars' era, only a small garrison was left before the tower was gradually abandoned.
