By trapping icebergs from which ice blocks can be taken, the pack ice provides access to fresh water for communities who do not have a lake or a river nearby. The detached ice, easily kept at ambient temperature, is then debited as and when needed, like here for the preparation of tea. Otherwise, the snow covering the pack ice can also be melted.
