This Korowai woman is preparing 'sago bread', a food starch extracted from the pulp of the sago trunk. The collecting of sago, the Papuans' staple food, mobilizes the entire community : the men fell and debark the palm tree, then the women crush it until they reach the core fibers which they reduce to a pulp, filter and decant to consume them boiled or cooked on the fire in the form of flat bread. A tree can feed two to three families for a week.
