The city of Saint-Tropez was the first liberated by the landing of Provence. During the night of August 14 to 15, 1944, due to thick fog, Company C of the 509th Parachute Battalion and the 463rd Battalion found themselves dropped on the Saint-Tropez peninsula. To escape the planned Allied bombardment, they signaled their presence by writing the letters US with their parachutes. In the early morning, the German garrison of the citadel destroyed the installations of the port while Company C and the resistants of the brigade of the Moors abandoned the assault on the fortress and beat in retreat, confusing the Germans persuaded of an imminent major bombardment. The surrender of the German garrison allowed the 3rd Infantry Division to land on the beaches of Ramatuelle and Pampelonne.
