Puy de la Vache and its twin Puy de Lassolas served for the first carbon-14 dating of volcanoes in 1958. During the relatively recent volcanic explosions of the Chaîne des Puys in Auvergne, forests were indeed buried under the ashes. The determination of the quotient of carbon contained in the organic matter of the fossilized wood has made it possible to date the eruptions of the two volcanoes.
