The Turenne Gate

At the end of the 15th century, the construction of the artillery tower by Robert II de La Marck at the foot of the twin towers permanently sealed off the original entrance to the Sedan Castle. The artillery tower incorporated the ‘petit châtelet’ before being itself integrated into the Ladies’ Bastion in 1572. A new gatehouse, bearing the arms of Robert II, was therefore built to the northwest, around 1500. A century later, the entrance was redesigned by Henri de La Tour d’Auvergne, who gave it its current name. Originally protected by a large châtelet preceded by a water moat, the Turenne Gate was refurbished in 1825.
