Located inside the Grands Causses Regional Nature Park, Mostuéjouls guards the gateway to the Gorges du Tarn. It spreads out over about 11 square miles (30 km²) between the Tarn and the Causse de Sauveterre, where it climbs to 3,156 ft (962 m). While most of the village extends on the right bank of the river, it crosses it over 212 acres (86 ha) along the bank of Notre-Dame-des-Champs, where stands the listed eponymous Romanesque church. Mostuéjouls, protected by the ledge of the Causse of Sauveterre, has been inhabited since the Neolithic period.
