The Porte de Maguelone (Maguelone gate) is an architectural vestige that marks the entrance to the eponymous peninsula. Located 6.21 miles (10 km) by car from the city center of the town of Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, this centuries-old site announces the start of a walk that continues to Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Maguelone Cathedral. The Catholic monument, built between the 12th and 13th centuries, can be visited for free. The site was first an island before welcoming the cathedral-fortress that often served as a shelter for the popes of Rome.
