The Girose glacier extends 11,811 ft (3,600 m) above sea level on the shady peak of the Pic de la Grave in the Hautes-Alpes department. Its glacial front descends to an altitude of about 9,186 ft (2,800 m). The Girose glacier is extended to the west by the Mont-de-Lans glacier with which it forms, over a length of 3.7 miles (6 km) from east to west, the largest ice cap in France. Part of Les Deux Alpes and La Grave skiing area extends over the glacier whose crevasses and seracs can be discovered with high mountain guides.
