The Place Jean-Baptiste Clément

The journalist and songwriter Jean-Baptiste Clément (1836-1903) was elected a member of the Paris Commune in 1871, the most important experience of his life. But if he has gone down in history, it is as the author of the song “Le Temps des Cerises” which, although written in 1867, is inseparable from the Paris insurrection. This work, although not at all political, was one of the most recorded songs in France from the beginning of the recording industry (1895). On 26 February 1903, thousands of Parisians attended the burial of Jean-Baptiste Clément in the Père-Lachaise cemetery.
