The Place du Tertre

The heart of the old village of Montmartre beats at Place du Tertre, a few metres from the Sacré-Coeur basilica. In 1790, Félix Laporte, the first mayor of Montmartre, set up the town hall in his home. He often met Danton at the restaurant La Mère Catherine, which is still in business. The legend of artistic Montmartre was established from 1890 to 1940, thanks to the studios frequented by Utrillo, Modigliani, Matisse, Picasso, Braque, and others. Today, the Place du Tertre is shared between the eight restaurants and the “artists”, portraitists, caricaturists and other painters accredited by the Town Hall.
