The most critical phase
0
0
As soon as it arrives at the surface of the earth after its fifth molt, the nymphoid larva of the cicada attaches itself to a support of low vegetation to perform its imaginal molt. The imago - or adult cicada - appears in about 15 minutes and leaves behind its exuvia, the dead envelope of the larva (photo). It will take another 3 to 5 hours for the cicada to acquire a full pigmentation and the use of its wings. It constitutes the most critical phase of its life and the moment when it finds itself defenseless against its predators (ants, wasps, magpies) and unable to flee.
