Qatar’s Little Venice

Built on an archipelago of artificial islands linked by dykes, The Pearl-Qatar comprises several residential areas, each with a distinctive architectural style inspired by the cultures of the Western world. The oldest neighbourhood, Porto Arabia, is nicknamed the “Middle Eastern Riviera”. Its 1.5 mile (2.5 kilometres) long waterfront promenade offers a view of the many yachts moored in its marina. The Qanat Quartier (photo) is also called “Little Venice”. It is criss-crossed by 1 mile (1.6 kilometre) of canals and houses a replica of the Rialto Bridge, one of the most famous sites in the city of the Doges. The Medina Centrale is a reminder of Arab tradition and culture and is full of esplanades, gardens, children’s playgrounds, shops, and restaurants. Finally, the Abraj Quartier gathers – in seven majestic towers of about 40 floors – the offices of the big companies that have contributed to the economic development of the country.
