This 'qulittuq' (parka) is typical of the Yup'ik and Inuvialuit who mark their clothing with 'pukiq' - white caribou fur – 'roots' or inserts - down to the front of the hood. These root motifs represent a walrus tusk. This 'qulittuq' is made of dark brown caribou skins, recovered in summer before the autumn rains. The long, unequal wolverine fur around the hood illustrates the Inuit survival skills: it catches the ice crystals formed by the breath and reduces the effects of the wind by creating eddies.
