With the Treaty of Munster-Westphalia in 1648, the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, in ruins, fell to King Louis XIV. He confiscated it from the Fugger family, who controlled it then, and handed it over to the descendants of François-Ferdinand of Sickingen. Many Alsatian villages, severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War, were also rebuilt. Some of their old houses still bear the traces of the restoration. The repairs ordered by the Sun King enabled the revival of Alsace's economy.
