The Bergheim mosaic

A large mosaic from the 3rd century AD, discovered in 1848 in Bergheim (Haut-Rhin), is one of the earliest surviving works in the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar. Although it originally measured over 80 m², only one eighth of it was saved. It is a polychrome pavement mosaic, reminiscent of a richly decorated carpet. A two-stranded braid surrounds a complex composition, mainly showing geometric patterns. After being exhibited in the chapel of the former Dominican convent, it is now displayed in the basement of the museum, in a room dedicated to the Roman period.
