In 1794, about twenty English ships were chased out from the south of France by Napoleon Bonaparte. Then they crossed the Mediterranean sea to the island Corsica and bombarded the tower of La Mortella. It was partially destroyed but it still stands today, from the top of its 11 m (36 ft) high.
