All along its littoral, Corsica is dotted of Genoese towers. Their construction goes back to the invasion of surrounding territories in the 16th century. Fearing an invasion, the Republic of Genoa built these fortresses along the coast in order to guard the horizon and prevent possible assaults. Despite these precautions, Corsica suffered from many attacks and sieges during which many towers collapsed. In 1730, Corsica had 120 towers, nowadays they are barely 90.
