The name Savon de Marseille is not linked to a location but to a so-called Marseille saponification method developed thanks to the Leblanc process for the chemical manufacture of caustic soda. This method involves several steps - pasting and spinning, cooking, releasing and defatting, washing and liquidating, pouring and drying, cutting and stamping - which extend over a week to ten days.
