The Guédelon wood squaring method

Based on various data from the 13th century and encounters, a wood squaring method was implemented on the Guédelon construction site. The work is done on trestles using clamps. The lineage is practiced with a line, then the squaring is done with a mutton shoulder doloire and a cooper's doloire. The woodcutter first removes the sapwood (the living part of the oak) and carves the piece in the heartwood (the more mineral part). The piece is roughed out by making with an ax a series of vertical cuts of the same depth every eight to twelve inches (20 to 30 cm). The doloire then laterally removes the bark located between the notches and refines the work by flattening the surface of the piece of wood.
